Rectangular & Steel Square Tubing Applications
Steel rectangular tube and steel square tube products are specifically designed to add additional strength to a project while also concealing wires, pipes and other types of moving parts. Since steel square and rectangle tubes can be easily welded, punched, formed and drilled, they provide a lightweight alternative to other types of steel products, such as wide flange steel and I-beams. Some of the applications that regularly utilize steel rectangular tubing and square steel tubing, include:
- Metal structures
- General fabrication
- Transportation equipment
- Manufacturing
- Repairs
- Frames
- Truck beds
- And more
Steel Rectangular Tubing & Steel Square Tubing Advantages
Since it can be utilized for numerous types of applications, steel rectangular tube and steel square tube products are an extremely popular option throughout a broad range of industries. Rectangular and square steel tubing provides great strength-to-weight ratios, which means that less steel by weight is required to accomplish the job. These tubing products also provide outstanding support and compression features, which allow this shape of steel to be used for a wide range of column applications. Some other beneficial qualities of steel rectangular and square tubing, include:
- Increased uniform strength
- Cost effective
- Recyclable
- High torsional strength
- Fire resistant
- Will not warp
Rectangle Steel Tube & Steel Square Tubing Properties
ASTM A500 verified steel square and rectangular tubing maintains established, clearly defined seams that are not located anywhere within the curvature of the tube. This type of quality control allows for a consistently well-maintained product that is strong and can resist stress from all directions, while being able to easily connect to other structural shapes. A 10.6 radius of corners is also preserved so the corner section of the rectangular and square steel tubing does not exceed the set parameter of specified wall thickness.
Additionally, some of the structural steel items may contain the abbreviation “HSS,” which stands for Hollow Structural Section. This notation defines a square or rectangular steel tube that meets the structural specifications of ASTM A500 Grade B or C. If, however, you see the ASTM A500 designation on a print without a corresponding grade, please ask your engineer for additional clarification, since the minimum tensile strength of Grade C is higher than that of Grade B.
Rectangle and square steel tube from M & K Metals is available in 20’ lengths and various thicknesses with added steel and carbon steel rectangular tubing options.
Square & Rectangular Structural Steel Tubing Material Properties
The composition of steel is generally that of iron and carbon with other trace elements that structure the minority of the material. Nickel and manganese are often added to raw steel compositions to provide increased tensile strength and to promote increased stability within the iron-carbon solution. In addition, chromium increases the hardness of the steel, while the melting temperature, and vanadium also increases hardness while making it less prone to metal fatigue.
